Upper school gets £10m for revamp

BURNHAM Upper School is to undergo a major refurbishment as part of an £80.8m investment into six secondary schools.

Bucks County Council successfully bid for a share of almost £420m under the Building Schools for the Future programme because Bucks was able to show it was ready to hit the ground running with projects at its selected schools.

Now Burnham Upper will get around £10m to completely refurbish the 1960's buildings.

Headteacher Max Bilsborough said: "It is massive, really significant news for the school. The results have gone up and we are developing the curriculum, now the school will have buildings to meet a curriculum for the 21st Century. We are very excited, we have already started work on the school's development plan and what the school will look like."

The school in Opendale Road, Burnham, is also bidding for a health and beauty suite from the local authority, with news expected shortly.

Other schools to be refurbished are Chesham Park Community School, Mandeville School and The Grange in Aylesbury, and Buckingham Upper School, while Furze Down in Winslow will undergo a complete rebuild.

Marion Clayton, Buckinghamshire's Cabinet Member for Achievement and Learning, said: "This is just the morale boost we needed. We have fought long and hard to secure funding to improve those schools most in need of work, and at last we can look forward to providing pupils and staff with learning environments they fully deserve.

"We went through a rigorous process and, because we were ahead of the game and ready to go with the projects we were bidding for, our bid succeeded. We cannot wait to get started."
