THE WEXHAM Park Hospital Urology Department proved to be a world leader in robotic surgery after hosting surgeons from all over the world for a demonstration.

The hospital held it's second workshop for visiting experts on using a Da Vinci SI Robot to operate on patients who have renal cancer (kidneys) and prostate cancer.

Professor Craig Rogers from Detroit flew in especially to perform the procedure to an astounded audience via a live link-up on Friday, February 3.

Surgeon Omar Karim, a Consultant Urologist at the hospital, says that patients are coming to Wexham from across the UK and from countries as far away as Pakistan.

He said: "We've got patients from all over the country.

"It is a real honour for Wexham that such eminent European surgeons recognise this hospital as one of the leading centres in the UK for robotic assisted surgery.

"We have had a patient from Nicola Sturgeon's constituency in Scotland and she's the Scottish Health Minister. Also, I just received a text from the live link-up saying 'No questions from the audience, they're all in awe'."

The hospital was able to import parts for the robot to operate on Angela Stone, 52, from Marlow but brought up in Slough, who had been diagnosed with renal cancer while on holiday in Thailand last summer.

Mrs Stone, who was given a clean bill of health after the operation, decided to buy the necessary piece of equipment, costing £54,000 needed to operate on renal cancer patients as a way of saying thank you.

She said: "To do this in Wexham Park Hospital, in Slough, is brilliant. Buying the equipment, I thought, was the best way to say thank you"

Prostate cancer patient David Dines, 53, from London, said: "Mr Karim is my hero and because of him, the cancerous prostate is all out."
