THE athletic stars of the future from Slough were given a financial boost on their road to the Olympic Games.
The Albert Pusey Memorial Fund, operated by the Slough Sports Council, awarded seven young athletes a grant to help cover costs of training, competing and progressing their career.
One recipient was 20-year-old Daniel Pembroke, a javelin thrower from Slough, who has been ranked fifth in the UK, is a former UK under-20 champion and hopes to qualify for the Olympic Games in London in the summer.
The ceremony was held at the new Mayor's Parlour at St Martin's Place, Slough, on Tuesday and Mayor of Slough, Cllr Sukhjut Dhaliwal, presented the youngsters with their awards.
Robin Woolman, treasurer and one of four trustees of the fund, said: "It was the first presentation that we had in the new Mayor's parlour as it's usually in the town hall. The Mayor was very accommodating. The recipients all thanked the trustees for the financial rewards and they hope to prove themselves. We're hoping that Daniel makes the Olympic Games."
