A REPORTER will be swapping the office for the outdoors to raise money for Berkshire's first children's hospice.

Richard Cutcher will be joining the Parky's Pride team, led by inspirational mum and fundraiser Fiona Devine, when he takes on the Windsor Half Marathon on October 7.

Twenty runners have signed up to support the Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Service, and the charity is hoping to attract more fundraisers.

Richard, who completed the Great North Run in 2008 but admits to have let himself go since, said: "Fiona is a real inspiration. I have followed her progress closely as her charity works to build Berkshire's children's hospice and when I heard she was undertaking this personal challenge, I wanted to offer my support.

"I hope lots more runners will sign up in support of Alexander Devine."

Mrs Devine and her husband John set up the charity after the death of their eight-year-old son Alexander from a brain tumour in 2006 and have raised £1.2m towards building Berkshire's first children's hospice.

The 42-year-old had never run before she started training in January and is being supported by Windsor Leisure Centre, in Stovell Road.

Speaking to The Observer, she said: "I have started from nowhere and it has been tough.

"I am really pleased that I am doing it and the support I have received from the centre, friends and my family has been incredible. All round the experience is teaching me a lot about myself."

Jes Spencer, the manager of the centre who will run with Mrs Devine, is proud of her progress. He said: "We are relishing the challenge and we look forward to seeing Fiona at her training sessions."

The charity received a boost when planning permission was granted for the hospice site in Cox Green, Maidenhead in October. Another £2m-£3m in funds is needed before work can begin.

Runners can sign up for the race by visiting www.runwindsor.com and once they are entered email juliap@alexanderdevine.org to be registered as part of the Parky's Pride team.
