FIVE family and friends are plunging 12,000ft from a plane to raise money for Laura Allen, who passed away last year as a result of cervical cancer.

Harriet Yuen, 41, from Cippenham, plans to skydive alongside Gideon Fenn, her brother and Laura’s father, Scott Fenn, Laura’s brother and family friends Taku Miyakoshi and Richard Rossitter.

The group will be jumping out of a plane in Swansea over the Gower Peninsula on July 18, a year on from Laura’s death on July 17, 2014.

In October 2013, Mrs Yuen’s niece, Laura, was diagnosed with stage 3 cervical cancer at 21-years-old, just after she had given birth to her son, William.

Just 9 months later, aged 22, she passed away.

Mrs Yuen said: “As somebody so young, with her whole life ahead of her, it took us all by complete surprise.

“We didn’t have time to stop and think, it was just tragic.” Mrs Yuen, who is petrified of heights, initially decided to take on the sky dive as a solo challenge.

However when her brother expressed his interest in joining her, they agreed that several people making the jump, each with their own memories of Laura would make the experience even more special.

Mrs Yuen said: “We all have our own personal experiences [of Laura] and we thought by joining these together it would be more powerful.

“It’s still quite emotional for us and we thought doing something positive would give us something to focus on in these dark months.” The group each have a personal target of £500.

Mrs Yuen said: “We’re raising money for the hospice [St David’s Hospice Care (Gwent and S. Powys)] who looked after her in her final days.

“But we’re not only doing it to raise money for the fantastic hospice - more needs to be done to raise awareness that women should be getting smear tests.

She says at the moment she is feeling a mixture of excitement and nerves at the prospect of the jump.

She said: “Excitement has taken over the nerves, but there’s no saying what I’ll be like when I’m up there.” To make a donation to Laura’s Falling Angels and their group tandem jump visit www.justgiving.com/Laurasangels Mrs Yuen added: “If you get the opportunity to do something amazing, take it.
