Rotarian Ram Bedi and his wife Shubi have travelled to India to bring the gift of sight to cataract sufferers.

It was the 13th year running that Mr Bedi, of Temple Way, Farnham Common who is past president of Slough Rotary Club and his wife had organised the Eye Camp, which provides cataract operations for the visually impaired.

This spring the operations took place at Shahabad Markanda about 100 miles north of Delhi. The local Rotary Club there had distributed leaflets in Hindi around the villages prior to the event and 502 blind people were registered at the Eye Screening Camp at the Devi Mandir.

Each patient was examined by a team of doctors headed by Dr. Prafull Kumar Manjhi A total of 87 of the most serious cases were selected to be operated at Dr. Veena Chaudhry Foundation Eye Hospital. The remaining patients were treated by medicines or supplied with glasses. Lunch was arranged for all the 502 patients by the Rotary Club of Shahabad.

Mr Bedi said: "I'm grateful to all relations and friends who contributed with donations for this year's Eye Camp including co-operation from the Rotary Club of Shahabad Markanda in India."

Helping cataract sufferers in India is one of the Rotary Club's top priorities.
