A new council flat development has reached a major milestone - as the last tile was laid on the roof.

Lydia Court – named after former Mayor of Slough, Lydia Simmons – is a development of 11 new council homes on Elliman Avenue; including a ground floor three bedroom apartment built to wheelchair standards, with its own front door access, dedicated parking and garden area.

Councillor Zaffar Ajaib, commissioner for housing and urban renewal, had the chance to secure the last ridge tile on the roof of block which will be welcoming tenants from the council’s waiting list in the summer.

The one, two and three bedroom apartments are being built for the council by Slough Urban Renewal (SUR) ) a partnership between Slough Borough Council and Morgan Sindall Investments Ltd which is driving regeneration across the town including in leisure, housing, community and school buildings.

Councillor Ajaib, said: “We promised we would provide more council homes for people on the housing register and Lydia Court is part of that promise.

“I am proud we are a council building new homes for our residents and I particularly excited about Lydia Court as it is the first of many new council home developments coming up.”

He added: “The scaffolding was really high, but I am honoured to have been part of the building of these amazing apartments – even if it was just putting on one roof tile!”

David Freer, development manager for SUR, said: “We are delighted to get to this important stage in the construction of Lydia Court.

“We look forward to it opening in the summer providing new homes for local people.”
