A six months old baby girl found dead in her bed had been suffering from an influenza virus an inquest has been told.

Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford found that Sarah Akua Serwaah-Boampong, of High Street, Slough died of natural causes when the inquest was held on Wednesday at Reading Town Hall.

Sarah was found in bed at 7am on March 7 by her mother - she was cold and did not seem to be breathing.

Paramedics were called and tried in vain to revive her but she was declared dead at Wexham Park Hospital at 7.40am.

A post mortem carried out by paediatric pathologist Doctor Darren Fowler found that Sarah was well cared for but had an inflammation to her lung, identifiable as the influenza A virus.

The coroner Mr Bedford heard that the Sarah and her siblings all had colds around that time and that she had had a cough which seemed to get better after taking medicine the day before. Her parents checked on all their children during the night.

Mr Bedford described Sarah's death as very sad and said: "I believe influenza A was the primary cause here."

He returned a verdict of death by natural causes.
