A new drop in centre for older men on their own was launched at Langley by Slough's MP and the mayor on Saturday.

Men's Matters is a new charity that has been running successful drop-in centres at Windsor since the start of the year and has now expanded into Maidenhead as well as Langley.

The Langley venue at Longwood Park Resource Centre in Common Road, Langley will run on Tuesdays between 2pm and 4pm.

At Saturday's launch the MP Tan Dhesi announced his arrival by playing a jovial game of football with members, before joining Slough's Mayor Cllr Ishrat Shah, Foxborough ward councillor Cllr Madhuri Bedi and Men's Matters chairman Tim Walker to cut the ribbon opening the centre.

He said: "Isolation and loneliness can affect all of us. Older men are less likely to seek out help or assistance.

"Here they can try everything from cooking to computer technology - even drumming. I would like to have a go at that myself."

Cllr Bedi brought a touching personal note to the opening as she spoke about her father's experience of retiring from a busy work life.

She said: "Men's Matters is close to my heart. It is such a needed facility.

"My father went from being a businessmen to retiring and at home every day. If he had had something like this maybe he would still be here today."

Patrick Manning, 72, the leader of the Langley drop-in, said that isolation could lead to Alzheimers and earlier mortality as well as sleep loss.

He said: "But older people don't want to talk about their problems. The onus is on us to give them a reason to come out and enjoy themselves again."

Men's Matters is a Radian Housing initiative.

Shabana Farooq is the Community Development Officer for Radian - and worked with the members of Men's Matters to ensure the Saturday event went smoothly.
