A 14-year-old schoolgirl from Datchet will learn tomorrow night whether her short story has won the prestigious BBC Young Writers Award.

Miranda Crawford - a pupil at Slough's Upton Court Grammar School - has written one of five shortlisted stories created by young writers aged 14 to 18, who had to create whole worlds in just 1,000 words.

There were more than 500 entries.

Her story Decisions concerns tensions of a marriage breaking down and a child caught between two warring parents - captured through the metaphor of ‘tea’ and ‘coffee’.

Miranda's mum Carole joked: "She used her imagination."

The five shortlisted writers will attend the exclusive BBC National Short Story Award ceremony tomorrow at the BBC’s Radio Theatre, when the winner will be announced live on BBC Radio 4’s Front Row.

See this week's Observer to see if Miranda won.
