SLOUGH Town joint-manager Neil Baker has hailed the 6-0 FA Cup win away at Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday as the most complete performance he will ever see.

Matthew Lench was the star man as his hat-trick helped The Rebels to stun National League North club Gainsborough with a performance that gave Baker an ‘absolutely amazing feeling’.

Lench gave Slough a one-goal lead heading into the half-time interval at Northolme and the midfielder doubled the advantage less than a minute into the second period of the first round tie.

Strikers Chris Flood and Manny Williams both scored to put the Southern Premier Division club in dreamland, before Sean Fraser came off the substitutes bench to make it five.

Man-of-the-match Lench then complete his hat-trick, his second treble in as many matches, to put the icing on the cake, and it could have been more comfortable for Slough as Gavin James missed a penalty late on.

A delighted Baker told the Observer: “I can’t begin to explain how we’re feeling because it was the most complete performance I think I will ever see.

“We’ve had a few already this season to be honest. The Merthyr game was fantastic, being 4-0 down and winning the game 5-4 was just ridiculous. But this completely outshines anything we’ve ever done.

“We were absolutely fantastic from the first minute to the last. We worked hard and won first and seconds. I thought we were class all day.

“We caused them so many problems going forward that their back four could not deal with us, they really struggled with our pace out wide.

“We could’ve been two or three up at half-time and just put them to the sword in the second half.

“I came and watched Gainsborough the previous Saturday and they’re a good side. They’ve just gone seven unbeaten in a tough league.

“But, we’ve come here and put six past them and that’s an absolutely amazing feeling.

“We prepared properly. We went up to Grantham and stayed in a hotel on Friday. We did everything like you would if you were a pro club and boy have we been rewarded from those boys.

“Jon [Underwood] and I have been managing together for seven years now and that’s by far and above the best performance we’ve ever been involved in.

“We’ve been promoted and that was a fantastic day but this was beyond the realms of possibility.”

He continued: “We said at half-time we just needed to be a little bit more ruthless.

“We felt that their back four were struggling against us and that we were going to get more chances. We actually said that we could get three of four if we kept going.

“The second goal from Matt was brilliant and we will be seeing it a few times on the television I’m sure, it was an absolute top draw finish.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game and I thought we competed well with them. The concern was always going to be would they out-work us but we were absolutely brilliant from man to man.”

The reward is a second round tie at home to League One club Rochdale in early December, and Baker cannot wait for another four weeks of FA Cup build-up.

He said: “We are one of the lowest-ranked sides in the competition now and that brings its own exposure.

“It is great for the players and for us as managers, and it’s fantastic for the club and the fans, who were amazing with great noise on Saturday.

“It felt like being at a Football League club and everyone did their job.”
