A dedicated family man who built his own home in the village he loved and lived in for 66 years has died at the age of 90.

Jack Pengelly moved into Wraysbury in 1951 with his wife Beryl. They rented a small two roomed bungalow on Friary Island - built from wood and asbestos and set up on brick pillars.

Over many years he extended and transformed the bungalow, the garden and river frontage.

In a eulogy prepared for next week's funeral service his daughter Joy says: "It literally became the house that Jack built as he learnt and mastered the new skills required to achieve the next phase."

Mr Pengelly trained in sign writing and coachworks, working over the years at Lagonda and Aston Martin Cars in Egham, the Southern Electricity display studios in Windsor and finally as a supervisor running British Airways Motor Transport Body Shop.

But he based his home life around his beloved Wraysbury - particularly the Skiff and Punting Club, the Magna Carta Wine Circle where he became vice-president and the Bowls Club.

Mr Pengelly started to play short mat bowls in the Village Hall, teaming with Bob Marshall and other villagers 20 years ago to establish an outdoor club with rinks. He ended up its president.

Last August Mr and Mrs Pengelly moved into the Princess Christian Residential Home. He was able to relax as they took over the much needed daily care for Beryl.

His daughter Joy describes him as 'a very special man who will be missed by so many. He will be safely tucked into the hearts of his loved ones and his memory will live on in the village due to his involvement during his time with us'.

She said: "When his first grandchild was born he bought a 4 berth launch, appropriately called Wee Sprog. He had recently retired so he and Beryl would take an early morning trip up river, past the lock cut, up to the main weir to enjoy their breakfast watching king fishers and other birds going about their daily activities."

He leaves his wife Beryl, two daughters Joy and Kay, grand-daughters Emma, Katie and Jane and great-grandchildren Bryony, Alyssa and MJ (Marc Jack).

The funeral is at Woking Crematorium on Tuesday, April 3 at 11.45am followed by a reception at Wraysbury Village Club from 1.30pm.
