STUDENTS have been awarded for helping an elderly woman who collapsed on a dual carriageway.

Three students of Churchmead School, in Priory Way, Datchet, were walking out of the Queensmere shopping centre in Slough at around 4.30pm on November 24 last year, when they noticed Hilary Parsons, 70, of Langley, lying face down on the edge of the busy Wellington Street dual carriageway.

The students, Owen Clarke, Musqit Elahi, and head boy Max Lewandowski, all 15, stopped the traffic in order to ensure her safety, and helped her across the street so she could sit on a bench. One of the students also gave her his coat to keep her warm, and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived.

Mrs Parsons said: “I fell over onto the road, on the edge of the dual carriageway. I couldn’t get up – I couldn’t move.”

Her husband, Perry Parsons, 72, met his wife’s rescuers for the first time at the Churchmead award ceremony on Tuesday.

Mr Parsons, a former teacher, said: “I am so pleased that Churchmead School is rewarding these boys, not just for the swift action they took in helping Hilary, but for the kindness and chirpiness with which they did so. Hilary was always aware of their chatter, concern and cheerfully supportive nature.”

Hilary was treated at Wexham Park Hospital on the day for a cut above her eye, but went on to make a full recovery.

Mr Parsons personally thanked each of the boys for their kind support of his wife.

The three were not the only Churchmead students to have become involved, as Mr Parsons said: “I think six to seven students, including one to two girls, also provided help – and they wouldn’t leave until the ambulance had come.”

Mr Lewandowski, said: “Me and my friends saw that there was oncoming traffic, so we stopped the traffic and helped her onto the other side of the road to a bench. We kept talking to her, and gave her our coats. We just waited there until the ambulance came.”

The award was presented by Datchet business ComXo.
