A quick trip to his nearest Lidl shop for a £2 jar of coffee left 65-year-old Headley Stevens facing a £90 fine after he parked at the store.

Mr Stevens, of Belmont, Slough made two trips to the store in Farnham Road back in February. The first was at 8am when he spent half an hour there and spent £5.66.

He went back at 10pm when he realised he was out of coffee, spending £2.5.

A month later he received a demand to pay a parking fee from the Ascot based company Athena ANPR, saying he had parked at the store all day - followed three days later by a reminder that said he now owed £90 because he had not paid at once.

A furious Mr Stevens, who has lived in Slough since 1985, said: "I have used Lidl for years. I remember my mother taking me to their Ealing store.

"Now I'm very disappointed with Lidl."

This week the Lidl company confirmed the fine was being cancelled. But Mr Stevens still is not happy, particularly as exactly the same thing happened a year ago.

He says that on that occasion two visits to the shop by him and his wife were 'merged' into one by Athena. His wife paid the fine. although he says the money was reimbursed when he appealed.

But now he has had enough.

He said: "This has put a lot of pressure on my and my wife and I still feel aggrieved.

"There has been no explanation as to why they should have thought I had just parked there for 14 hours."

A spokesman for Lidl said: "We were very sorry to hear of this matter, which unfortunately occurred due to a technical error. As a result, the car park management system in operation at our store has been updated and following contact with Athena ANPR over the bank holiday weekend the customer's parking charge is in the process of being cancelled."
