Building evacuated and containment area set-up as firefighters contain chemical

FIREFIGHTERS were called to contain a chemical after a spillage at Lonza Biologics this morning with a person rushed to hospital after breathing in fumes.

Two crews from Slough and a specialist unit from Whitley Wood, in Reading, went to the Bath Road centre at 7am after four litres of the chemical were spilt.

The crew were called out by the ambulance service who were treating a person with chemical inhalation. The person was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police also helped evacuate workers and put a containment area around the building. Surrounding roads were also closed off.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus moved the chemical to a safe area at the site.

A police spokesman said the chemical wasn't posing any risk to anybody outside the building but they decided to evacuate and close down nearby roads to facilitate the emergency services' work.

He also added there was a strong smell of fish during the clean-up.

Lonza produce a full range of bioresearch products, development services and manufacturing for functional and active ingredients in the life sciences market.

Roads reopened at 9.26am.
