'WE don’t want Manhattan next to Maplin Park’.

That was the advice from councillors who were asked for their thoughts on plans to build housing on a former oil terminal in Langley.

Slough Borough Council officers said the former Total Oil Terminal, between Langley Train Station and the Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal, is being eyed by developers wanting to cash in on Crossrail.

Councillors said they are wary of building too much high density housing on the site and would want a mix of homes, including provision for families.

Cllr James Swindlehurst raised concerns about adding extra pressure to the already congested roads, especially in the Harrow Market.

He added: “We don’t want Manhattan next to Maplin Park.” Cllr Martin Carter said: “We want a good mix of homes, a combination between higher density with larger three-bedrooms.” The report said the site could become a 'very attractive’ development and form a hub around the station.

But it adds there are significant constraints, including contamination, part of the area is liable to flooding and high noise levels from passing trains.

Ward Cllr Diana Coad said she would be opposed to the plans, because of added congestion.
