A FATHER and his son will take on a 100km walk to raise money for a suicide prevention charity in memory of a loved one who took his own life.

Reverend Andrew Baker, Superintendent Minister of St Andrew’s Methodist Church, Slough, will be joined by son Tim, 24, for the walk along the Thames Path from Putney to Henley tomorrow (Saturday).

The pair have already raised more than £7,000 for Papyrus, the national charity for the prevention of young suicide, in memory of younger son Peter who took his own life two years ago, aged 18.

Rev Baker, 55, said: “We feel after two years it’s time to do something for others that might prevent them having to go through what we have.” The pair will set off from Putney at 3am and aim to reach Henley by midnight.

“Both of us go walking and it’s something we like to do,” Rev Baker said. “Plus at my age and fitness level I couldn’t run so it’s my only choice! I don’t know whether we’ll make it or not, but I’ll give it a good shot.” They have already smashed the £3,000 target set and Rev Baker added: “We are very humbled by the amount that has been raised. Friends and people that knew Peter felt donating was something they could do.” An inquest into Peter’s death heard he was found in the garage of the family home, in Upton Road, Slough, with burns to the front of his body in July, 2012.

Hundreds of heartfelt tributes were paid to the popular teenager who was described as an 'inspiration and a light’. More than 400 people attended a service of thanksgiving for the drama enthusiast, who was also a steward at the church.
