GREENPEACE activists dressed as Lego people danced outside the company’s Slough HQ in protest of it promoting oil major Shell on its toys.
The activists danced to the Lego movie theme tune 'Everything is Awesome’ before trying to hand over a 15,000-strong petition. But the company refused to accept the petition at the Bath Road offices on Tuesday.
Elena Polisano, Arctic campaigner from Greenpeace, said: “Lego is a trusted brand, but it’s trying to dodge its responsibility. As long as Lego keeps on helping Shell clean up its image, it’s helping it get away with aggressively hunting for oil in the extreme and fragile Arctic. An oil spill there would be impossible to clean up, devastating the unique Arctic wildlife.” The campaign was launched on July 1, with the hashtag #BlockShell used more than 70,000 since. A campaign video has also been viewed more than 3m times.
Responding to the campaign, Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, president and chief executive officer of the LEGO Group, said: “We firmly believe that this matter must be handled between Shell and Greenpeace. We are saddened when the Lego brand is used as a tool in any dispute between organisations.”
