SHOCKING domestic abuse statistics inspired a group of 14 teenagers to make a stand.

The 16 and 17-year-olds were raising money and awareness in Slough High Street, from Monday to Wednesday, about domestic abuse. They were prompted by figures published on The Dash Charity’s website.

Ajay Gulati, 17, said: “The statistics were shocking. It really affected us and we decided to do a project to try to combat domestic abuse in Slough.” The group sold home-made cakes and cookies for 50p, with proceeds to be donated to domestic abuse charities – The Dash Charity and ManKind Initiative. Cllr Diana Coad, who worked with abuse victims, gave a speech on Tuesday, and they also organised role play.

The Langley Grammar school pupil said he was comforted by the confrontational response of onlookers who watched as they acted out a man abusing a woman, but when a woman was attacking a man, no one intervened.

The event was part of an NCS project – a Government-run scheme to get young people active in the community.

The group is hoping to remain vocal on social media to spread awareness of abuse in the area.
