THE Mayor of Slough got on board for a trip down the newly-dredged Slough Arm of the Grand Union Canal.

Cllr Shafiq Chaudhry and his wife, mayoress Raseela, enjoyed a cruise down the canal on Saturday.

It was organised by the Canal and River Trust which has just completed a month-long restoration of the River Fray Aqueduct, part of the Slough Arm’s major revamp.

It also includes dredging, new signage and the removal of a dilapidated concrete jetty at the Slough basin.

Graham Smith, the trust’s construction supervisor for London, said: “The Canal and River Trust prides itself on sympathetically restoring our old canals and giving them the care and attention they merit so we’ve been able to put that right those mistakes as well as addressing the more recent vandalism. The aqueduct is an important structure and piece of local history so it’s great to see it in good condition again.”
