AN INFANT school has been plunged into 'special measures’ after Ofsted inspectors rated the leadership and teaching 'inadequate’.

A report, published on Tuesday (9/9), states pupil achievement, quality of teaching, and leadership and management at Godolphin Infant School, in Warrington Avenue, Slough, is 'inadequate’. The behaviour and safety of pupils was rated 'requires improvement’.

It adds not enough progress is being made in the achievement of pupils, and performance is not checked by teachers.

The impact of teaching is 'ineffective’, according to the report following an inspection on June 12 and 13. It also states school leaders do not have an accurate view on how the school is performing.

The school is also failing to carry out rigorous checks on the suitability of employees, with the report stating: “Statutory requirements for safeguarding are mostly met. However, the school does not check or record whether all employees have the right to work in the United Kingdom.” This is the school’s first inspection since joining the Godolphin Education Trust with Godolphin Junior School in 2012.

The school’s previous inspection, in February 2010, rated the school 'good’.

Petra Ali, deputy headteacher, said it was a 'disappointing outcome for the school and its community’.

“It is unusual for a school such as Godolphin Infants, where standards of attainment at the end of Year 2 are in line with national averages, to be placed into an Ofsted category of concern,” she added.

“The report itself says that parents know their children are happy and safe at the school and the 'stay and play’ session in reception is mentioned positively by inspectors. The children are of paramount importance to us all and we are pleased the report reflects what a harmonious school we are.

“The most important thing now is to undertake rigorous school improvement activity in response to the judgement. The attitude is one of determination to make necessary improvements. We are driven to provide the very best education for our children and an action plan is in place to address the issues raised.”
