A DOCTOR who ignored a 'life or death’ situation when he failed to urgently deliver a dying baby has been struck off the medical register.

A Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) panel ruled to wipe Dr Chandrasiri Abayasiriwardena’s name from the medical register on Monday.

He failed to carry out an emergency Caesarean section after a 32-week pregnant mother was admitted to Wexham Park Hospital after a car crash in November, 2008, the panel had earlier heard.

The unborn baby had a slow heart rate, but he left a midwife to monitor the situation and the emergency caesarean section was not performed for over an hour, the hearing was told last week.

The MPTS determination papers read: “The panel is satisfied that erasure is the proportionate and appropriate sanction in order to protect patients, the wider public interest and to declare and uphold proper standards of conduct.” He has 28 days to appeal the decision.
