MAJOR widening works on two of Slough’s most notorious pinchpoints are set to move a step closer next week.

Slough’s cabinet is due to approve overhauls to Windsor Road and Tuns Lane on Monday.

Changes include widening both roads, upgrading junctions and pedestrian crossings and putting in better infrastructure for buses.

The Copthorne roundabout will also be turned into a 'hamburger-style’ design - similar to the Bath Road roundabout outside Sainsbury’s.

If approved, work could start next summer with the new roads open for business in Autumn 2016.

Councillor Sohail Munawar, commissioner for social and economic inclusion, said: “Congestion is the biggest barrier to economic growth in Slough and for us to grow and maintain our standing as a world class place to do business we must tackle it.

“These schemes, along with the new rapid bus service we have planned for Bath Road, will make a huge difference to the 40,000 people who commute to Slough each day, as well as the people who live here.” Slough won £7.1m funding for the projects from the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (TVBLEP), which was in charge of dishing out a chunk of a £96.9m Government pot for transport schemes.

The council will stump up an extra £2m from its general funds balance for the Windsor Road scheme and another £1.1m for the Tuns Lane works.

Public consultations have been held for both schemes, with the council saying residents are 'mostly supportive’.

Savio DeCruz, head of transport for Slough Borough Council, added: “It is vital Windsor Road is running as smoothly as possible and the changes we’re proposing will allow us to improve traffic flow and make people’s journeys quicker and easier.

“They will also be a big part of the regeneration of the area, alongside plans for new high quality homes. It’s equally important we improve traffic flow on Tuns Lane, which is a major route to and from Slough Trading Estate used by thousands of business travellers every day.” Cabinet will meet at Chalvey community centre at 6.30pm.
