MOTORISTS are being urged to stay vigilant after a surge in thefts from vehicles.

Valuables were stolen from 20 cars, mostly overnight, in an eight-day spree earlier this month.

Now detectives are urging motorists to keep valuable items such as smart phones, tables and laptops out of sight.

Detective Sergeant Steve Madoc-Jones, from Local CID in Slough, said: “Slough has experienced a significant number of thefts from motor vehicles in Slough over the past week or so and I am urging motorists to be extra vigilant and to remove all valuables as a matter of urgency.

“Tackling vehicle crime remains very much a priority for us and I would appeal to residents and visitors to Slough to be vigilant with their personal belongings when parking their vehicles.

“Leaving valuable items in view or secreted in glove boxes or boots of vehicles is not advisable. Motorists should also ensure their vehicles are securely locked at all times as this will evidently help your chances of not becoming a victim of crime.” The thefts took place from December 4 to Thursday last week, mainly in Chalvey, Britwell and Langley. They included breaks ins on two unattended taxis.

Police have made arrests in the last few weeks as part of their efforts to crack down on the thefts. A recent pre-planned operation included a 28-year-old man being arrested on suspicion of 23 offences and another man, 20, arrested on suspicion of theft from motor vehicles. Both are on police bail.

Det Sgt Madoc-Jones added: “Despite the recent increase however, I am pleased to report that the overall number of thefts from motor vehicles in Slough is currently down by 17.6% which equates to 155 fewer victims this year compared to the same period last year.” Contact police with information on 101.
