THE parish council for a village facing decimation under Heathrow expansion plans has taken a swipe at Slough Borough Council - claiming it has broken a vow to nurture and make it a better place.

Colnbrook Parish Council chairman Cllr Peter Hood said a promise to look after the village was made by the then Mayor of Slough Ron Sibley when Colnbrook and Poyle was made part of the borough council in 1995.

He said it ‘hadn’t really happened’ and cited issues including the Grundon incinerator being installed in Colnbrook, but ‘mostly benefiting Slough’.

Cllr Hood was speaking during a cabinet meeting on Monday, where Slough councillors were discussing drawing up their response to the Davis Commission proposals for aviation expansion in the South East.

Cllr Hood said: “The best mitigation we can have for all the problems we have [from the airport] is to support expansion at Gatwick. Here we have an opportunity to cherish Colnbrook, to stand up for Colnbrook. It’s an important and historic place.” The borough council will finalise a formal response to the Airports Commission consultation in January. Cllrs pledged to get the ‘best deal’ for Slough, whatever the final decision for expansion is. The three proposals are for an additional runway to the north west of the current northern runway at Heathrow, an extension to the existing northern runway at Heathrow or a new runway at Gatwick Airport.

The Commission is due to publish its final report in the summer, after the general election.
