SLOUGH RFC head coach Darran Brown is confident that the club will be in a position to push for promotion next season.

Brown took over from ex-Greenies boss Lenny Bovington back in January and has been charged with building a squad capable of a return to the glory days.

In an eight-game spell in the hotseat, he has stabilised the club and instigated success against rivals Farnham Royal and Phoenix.

Slough finished the season in fifth position in Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier thanks to a 47-0 win against Chesham at Upton Court Park on Saturday. Brown believes the thrashing was a culmination of their hard work and boasts The Greenies are now gunning for a return to Southern Counties rugby.

Speaking exclusively to the Observer, he said: “To change the way you play takes time and the performance on Saturday was an accumulation of that, it was dominant.

“The forwards listened to instructions and were excellent in the scrum, even when we went down to 14-men.

“It was a great day and a good result, and over the course of the season fifth place isn’t too bad, we will take it. Tadley were the dominant side so fifth is probably about right.” Slough cruised to success against Chesham as Kinter Zvokunzwa touched down twice, Sam Rowe and James Flischer crossed over, and Matthew Fenwick bagged a penalty try. Max Miles and Kevin Dunne booted the conversions.

Brown continued: “We will be going forward and will be trying for promotion next year, we want to test ourselves out in the Southern Counties again.

“The players seem keen to progress and move the club forward, and the backing management has been very supportive. The club is supportive of the idea and we are all up for it.

“We aim to have two or three players for every position, that will strengthen the second team which you need when going for promotion.

“We have got two or three younger guys who have come through and stood up very well and five or six returning from injury next season.

“There is definitely quality there, as well as players in the second team we are keeping an eye on, but recruits that bring a good ethos will only strengthen and improve the club.” The Greenies will only rest for a short time before taking on sevens tournaments, and a new fitness regime ahead of the new season, which begins in September.
