JON Underwood has spoken of his delight after Slough Town cruised into the FA Trophy second qualifying round this season.

Rebels were far too good for lower-league Romford, emerging from the fog and subdued atmosphere at Ship Lane with a 4-0 win on Sunday.

The victory means Slough have now won seven of their last nine matches, and their reward is a trip to Frome Town in the next round on November 14.

Underwood suggested it was a routine win for Rebels last weekend, though his side are working increasingly hard to maintain their fine form.

The joint-managed told the Observer: “It was a game I guess we should be winning against a side a level below.

“The most important thing was getting the attitude and approach right, and the lads were fired up for it.

“It was important to start well and get Romford on the back foot, and we did that. We could’ve been two-up in 10 minutes and that set the tone for the game.

“In the end Romford had a bit of a go, but it ended up being a really comfortable game for us.

“They had a few chances at three and four-nil, but to be fair we had taken our foot off the gas a little. We were protecting injuries because the game was over at that point.

“No disrespect to Romford but they’re not having a fantastic time in their league. We’ve put in some better performances in recent games against strong Southern Premier opposition, and it was very different to Chippenham the previous midweek.”

He added: “It’s funny in football, when you are on a bad run confidence is down and you don’t know when you will win again.

“No we’ve forgotten how to lose, but the lads are working increasingly hard at the moment.

“We have a real goal threat and have tightened up defensively. We’ve been stronger defensively in the last month and are getting that consistency.”

Slough return to league action with a trip to Kings Lynn Town this Saturday (3pm) and Underwood is keen to keep their winning run going.

He said: “Kings Lynn have a good home record. They’ve already beaten Poole and Chippenham with a good crowd, and it’s not an easy place to go.

“It’s a long trek but we’re very much looking forward to it.

“It’s a tough test but we are playing with a lot of confidence.

“We’ve not watched them play but know they are a very young team. They are not playing with any real fear at the moment.

“It will be a high tempo game but we will not play any differently for Kings Lynn compared to anyone else.

“We’re happy with the set up and consistency in the team, and, hopefully, we can keep this run going.”
