FARNHAM Royal have recorded back-to-back victories in the BBO Championship for the first time since November after a 41-7 win over Oxford on Saturday.

The Royals thrashed Berkshire Shire Hall last week and were too good for second-bottom Oxford at Farnham Park, a result that moves Farnham up to fourth place in the table.

With a strong wind at their backs, the home team attacked early on and pressure resulted in points just five minutes in.

Oxford were penalised for not rolling away at the ruck and scrum half Tom Boardman knocked over from bang in front of the posts.

Seven minutes later, Farnham extended the lead with a try from centre Wayne Garstang. He found space through the midfield and swatted off the full back like a fly to cross for the opening try.

He was nearly embarrassed as he trotted over the line, unaware of a winger who was baring down on him, but he still managed to touch the ball down as he was tackled.

The referee then lost patience and decided to show flanker Adam Barley a yellow card.

The visitors were next to feel the wrath of the ref as their inside centre was sin-binned for the manner he entered the ruck.

After weathering the Oxford onslaught, Farnham crossed for two quick tries.

A powerful run from Jamie Moffat fed prop Jason Gumbs to cross for a converted score.

Straight from the restart, blindside flanker Stanlee Wilson ran through the heart of the Oxford pack and 60 metres down the left-hand touchline to draw the full back and set up the supporting Gumbs for a simple converted score.

In the second period, the Royals got their act together and crossed for a neatly worked bonus-point try.

The home home side showed good hands down the blind side as prop Gumbs put replacement winger Mark Jones in space.

He showed great strength to touch the ball down just before going into touch.

Oxford were rewarded for all their efforts soon after though Farnham would not be happy with their own in defence. A simple ball off the top of the lineout went to the fly half who took it to the line, and Royals’ midfield slipped off the tackle to allow him an open run for a converted score.

The hosts then crossed again to restore order as Garstang gathered a loose pass from the visitors’ scrum half to sprint through and score his second try of the match under the posts.

The final 10 minutes were played out in the Oxford 22 and Farnham crossed for a sixth try. Number eight Jamie Moffat broke from the base of a scrum, eight metres from the line and powered over.

The away team knew what was coming their way and had their own number eight defending at fly half, but still could not do anything to stop the try.
