JON UNDERWOOD challenged Slough Town to keep pace with Southern Premier Division leaders after a 3-2 win at Kings Langley on Saturday.

The Rebels aim to collect as many points as they can early on this season while the new-look squad continues to gel and performances start to improve.

Slough had to win the hard way last weekend, conceding a two-goal lead to Kings Langley before recovering to win 3-2 at Gaywood Park.

Underwood admits football can be a funny game sometimes, conceding he did not see the poor start coming, but has hinted that wins are more important that performances at this early stage.

“I think Kings Langley will feel they deserved a point and if it had been a draw we probably couldn’t have argued because we didn’t play well,” the Rebels joint-manager told Rebels Radio.

“The match at Banbury was our best performance of the season and we didn’t get what we deserved then, but at this moment in time we’re just trying to get as many points as we can.

“We’re still trying to gel, though, and I think we’ve done that fairly well. This team is going to get better and better.

“Saturday was a setback in terms of performance but a massive three points. I think we would’ve taken seven, and not six, points out of nine because we didn’t want to lose one of our first three games.

“So we want to push on and get a few more wins in August to try and keep us in a healthy position.

“It’s not the end of the world, but what is important is we have a couple of good weeks now and a couple of wins on the board to try and keep ourselves up close with the teams at the top.”

Slough followed the win at Kings Langley with a 0-0 draw against Stratford Town at Holloways Park on Tuesday evening.

The result means the Rebels stand eighth in the table with seven points from their opening four matches.

Slough host St Ives Town this Saturday (3pm) in what is expected to be their final home fixture at Holloways Park before the move into Arbour Park on Monday, August 29.
