SLOUGH got their Investec Women’s League Premier Division campaign off to a promising start on Saturday with a 0-0 draw at Leicester.

Head coach Kali Takher had his team well organised and their pace caused problems for their hosts.

Promoted Slough shaded the first half, but came under more pressure after half-time.

Captain Kat McGonigle commented: “We all felt it was a positive start for us.

“We had chances to win the game, but then so did they although I felt we could have edged it as we had a few corners near the end.

“But, we are happy to have taken a point from our first game back in the Premier Division.”

The Pink & Blacks looked particularly strong in midfield, where both Harriet Ward and Laura Bailey were impressive.

New signing, Kenyan star Betsy Ommala, had a quiet game compared to those back home, but that was largely down to her not seeing too much of the ball.

Leicester finished slightly the stronger side, but could not breach the Slough defence, and a draw was a fair result.

Their first home fixture of the season will see Clifton Robinsons visiting Upton Court Road this Saturday (12.15 pushback).

It will be a special day for the club, as it will also see the official opening of their pitch.

“It has been down for quite a while now, but we have never had an official opening, so we are doing it this Saturday,” said McGonigle.

Slough were hoping that one of the GB Olympic gold medallists would be able to “cut the ribbon” but they all appear to be away on holiday.

An England Hockey representative, however, is due to attend.

The ceremony is to take place following the game with Clifton Robinsons, at around 1.45pm and there will be a men’s match starting at 3pm.
