SLOUGH Town have extended their exceptional winning record in the Southern Premier Division to nine matches with victories over Cambridge City and Dunstable Town this week.

The Rebels beat Cambridge 1-0 at Arbour Park thanks to a headed goal from Mark Nisbet on Saturday, and followed up with a 1-0 win at Dunstable on Tuesday, when a Simon Dunn strike proved the difference between the two sides.

Their incredible run means Slough remain four points clear at the top of the table, with a game in hand on the chasing pack, and earned them the Southern Team of the Month prize for September.

Mark Scott has kept six clean sheets on the bounce in the league – nine in 13 matches – and has not conceded in over 620 minutes of football.

He believes that is more to do with his defence rather than his own heroics, but cannot see the Rebels being beaten in their current vein of form.

Speaking to the Observer, the Slough keeper beamed: “To win nine on the bounce has been exceptional really. When I played at Salisbury we had a good run of six games, but nothing to this extent.

“It’s funny because we were talking in the changing room about our bad pre-season, losing to lower league teams, and things still haven’t clicked fully because of injuries, especially up front.

“But we’ve got more experience and togetherness in the team compared to last year, especially at the back.

“Six clean sheets is down to the back four instead of my heroics. It starts up front with the lads pressing and forcing teams to go long, and we have a compact midfield.

“Probably my best game this season was against Hayes & Yeading, and I conceded in that one.

“Compared to last year, we’re a better team and defending well, even those that come into the side.

“Paul Stonehouse has come in from the league above and always played at that level, and Mark is from the level above.

“Experience is a fantastic thing to have and we’re al working as hard as we can.

“We’re playing consistently well and I’m only having one or two shots to save in a match, if that.

“The Arsenal invincibles did it for a whole season, and the way we’re playing at the moment I just can’t see us getting beat.”

Dunstable had lost their three previous matches but were unfortunate not to take the lead when a Jack Hutchinson shot hit the post.

The Rebels’ hopes took a blow when Lewis Putman was forced off with a pulled hamstring.

The deadlock was broken after 50 minutes as Scott reacted quickly to get the ball down field and a low James Dobson cross from the left was hit first time by Dunn.

His effort found the back of the net as Dunstable keeper Jack Smith failed to get enough on the ball to keep it out.

Scott commented: “It was probably our toughest game this season. Dunstable pressed and didn’t allow us to play so it was a bit of a scrappy game.

“They made it tough for us but it was a good response and a good win away from home.

“It was probably not a great game to watch, but the important thing is we got the win and another clean sheet.”

Slough make the 300-mile round trip to Merthyr Town this Saturday (3pm) before returning to Arbour Park for a Berks & Bucks Senior Cup first round tie against Beaconsfield SYCOB on Tuesday evening (7.45pm).

The winners will be at home to Milton Keynes Dons in the quarter-finals.

The Rebels have been drawn away to Northwood in round two of the Southern League Challenge Cup.

The tie will be played on Tuesday November 8.
