HEAD coach Alan Walters has been critical of his Slough side’s second-half display despite their Bucks Bowls semi-final derby success against Phoenix on Saturday.

Walters had mixed emotions after the 29-17 win away at their local rivals.

He said: “It was a game of two halves. The first was very good and we did what we had wanted to do all season.”

Slough were comfortable in the first period and held a 24-5 lead at the whistle, but the Greenies’ second-half performance frustrated Walters.

He said: “In the second-half we reverted back to type and did not stick to the game plan.

“We lost concentration and were so far ahead we played like individuals and not as a unit.”

Slough managed to hold on thanks to tries from Robbie Morrison, Sam Rowe and Aman Grewal going over twice either side of a Jack Jones touch down.

Max Miles kicked two conversions.

Walters said: “We were the better team on the day with a strong scrum, line-out and pod.

“It was an occasion for both teams and someone had to win unfortunately.”

Looking ahead to the final on December 3 against either Drifters or Chesham, Walters said: “It is good for us to look forward to.

“It is still early days in our construction but it looks healthy.

“It will be a tough one whoever we get but there are no prizes for coming second, so we will go out and try the best we can. We have played both of them before and narrowly lost but we have improved dramatically since then.

“The youngsters are now more experienced and are starting to step up and take responsibility.”

Slough face third placed Tadley at home in the league on Saturday at 2.30pm.

Walters said: “It will be a tough game.

“They have strong pack but we have a full squad to choose from for the first time in a while.”

“It looks good for us because we are more healthy than a month ago. Bar the Didcot game the rest have been close. Decision making has been poor at times but we could have won them all.”

Maidenhead return to action in South West One East this Saturday with a trip to Old Patesians in a clash of the top two sides in the division. Maidenhead currently hold a two-point lead at the summit.

Windsor, third from bottom at this stage, make the journey to Royal Wootton Bassett.

In the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier Drifters go to Chesham in a match that doubles-up as a Bucks Bowl semi-final, while Slough host Tadley and Phoenix welcome Abingdon.

In the Championship, Farnham Royal are at home to Faringdon.
