OUTGOING president Sir Matthew Pinsent was guest speaker at the annual Stoke Park dinner and prize-giving held in the sumptuous surroundings of the historic clubhouse.

Almost 100 members, including juniors, attended the event to see a roll of the winners and watch outgoing John Sweeney hand over the silverware.

Hany Abbas was crowned Player of the Year while Conor Gough, 14, was honoured for his new course record, achieved back in August when carding a gross 62 in the Junior Open.

Sweeney completed his last day in office by presenting the captain’s blazer to the incoming Vince Murphy, before Pinsent rounded off the evening in fine style with an inspired speech which included an awesome display of his four Olympic gold medals.

The next day, new captain Murphy braved a frosty morning to drive into office with a 165-yard effort off the first tee.

Stuart Collier is director of golf. He said: “It’s been a fabulous year for golf at Stoke Park. Not just with all the success enjoyed by our teams in winning national and local titles, but also in the quality of golf in our own competitions.

“Reassuringly, while the competition may be stiff, the camaraderie and great social spirit, inherent in everything we do here at Stoke Park, is always clearly evident.

"As we say cheerio to John, who has been an excellent hard-working captain, we welcome Vince who will, we’re sure, be equally as popular among the members."
