DILLY NEWTON said it was a dream come true after Slough ladies were crowned Super Sixes champions on Sunday.

The Pink and Blacks defeated Canterbury 2-0 in front of a crowd of 5,000 at the SSE Arena in Wembley, and will now represent England at the European Indoor Championships next year with Belgium scheduled to be the host nation.

Newton, who had been Slough’s leading scorer during their league campaign, was again on target in the final, with Georgia Whittaker adding the second goal.

“We couldn’t be happier, it’s a dream come true for us,” said Newton. “It was amazing to be here but even more special to win.

“We had just missed out before, so that made us even stronger and more hungry to win it.”

Slough had found it tough going in the Investec League this season and resume their fixtures at University of Birmingham this Saturday hovering just above the relegation zone.

Indoors they are red hot. They topped the league placings with an unbeaten record and again showed their quality on Sunday.

Newton added: “We’re good as we play as a team. We’re a real unit, we love playing with each other and that’s why we have been so successful.”

She paid tribute to Kat McGonigle, describing her as an “amazing captain who keeps us all together” while also praising coach Kali Takher and team manager Bill Griffiths.

McGonigle told the Observer: “We’re ecstatic. It’s been a brilliant indoor season for us. We have won the league which we didn’t really expect to do and now we’ve had to fight very hard to win two really tough games in the finals.”

Earlier on Sunday, the Upton Court Park side had beaten Sutton Coldfield 3-1 in their semi-final thanks to two goals from Laura Bailey and one by Harriett Ward.

It was the 14th time that Slough have won England’s indoor title, the previous occasion coming in 2008 when the final was played in Birmingham.

McGonigle continued: “There have been some tough times for the club over the last few years, but we’ve stuck together and tried really hard, so to achieve this is phenomenal for the club.

“This success has given everyone a boost, but the indoors is now behind us and we must concentrate on the outdoors.

“We go to Birmingham on Saturday and that’s a very important game for us.

“We have to refocus now on staying in the league. Nothing less than eighth place will be good enough for us and hopefully, we can finish even higher.”
