MEL Ive is extremely proud of the development shown by South Bucks despite a 5-0 defeat against Amersham & Chalfont on Saturday.

Ive admits that Bucks did not play to their usual standard but she praised the side for their fighting attitude.

“We knew it was always going to be a challenge as Amersham & Chalfont have a history of being an extremely strong club throughout their numerous teams,” head coach Ive told the Observer.

“Although we seemed lacklustre and didn’t play to our usual standard in the first half, the girls came out fighting and really brought back the attitude and passion they’ve shown all season.

“Unfortunately, as seen in previous games, having very few subs and losing Balpreet Gill near the start meant they tired, but I’m extremely proud of how all the girls are developing.

“A year ago at least 80 per cent of the team had never experienced league hockey, many had only played it as school and some never. So go get where they are now is amazing and a credit to the hard work, training and commitment they all give.”

Depleted due to illness, a number of the South Bucks team found themselves in new positions, including youngster Rachel Dunster who made her debut in defence.

It took less than 10 minutes for the well-drilled Amersham to capitalise, showing their skill and power to score two goals inside five minutes.

Bucks suffered a blow when Gill had to leave the field after a bad sprain to the ankle, which was followed by third Amersham goal.

A fourth goal came before half-time but, after an invigorating team talk from Mel and Dave Ive, Bucks came alive in the second half. Amersham scored a fifth from a lucky break.
