SLOUGH Town regained the winning thread in the Southern Premier Division with a 1-0 victory against Dunstable Town at Arbour Park on Saturday.

Simon Dunn got the only goal after 51 minutes in a match which saw both sides finish with 10-men.

Josh Oyinsan was shown a straight red card after a clash with Rebels defender Nathan Smart, who was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Slough joint-manager Jon Underwood told the Slough Midweek Observer: “I’m relieved and pleased to get the win and keep a clean sheet, but we made hard work of it. We were nowhere near our best.

“In the second half we improved from the first and got the goal at that point, which we deserved. We were the team pushing but, for the standards we set ourselves, we were nowhere near.

“We need to get a bit of consistency in terms of results and need to get a few wins back-to-back, so we will take it every day of the week.”

He continued: “It was the team that won 6-0 last Saturday and on Tuesday we were five down at half-time.

“The easy thing would be to rip that side apart but we played so well only a week ago and it was a shape we wanted to play.

“We felt the right thing to do was keep faith with those players that did so well last Saturday. There were certain factors we felt as to why Tuesday happened like it did, but we put faith in those players and gave them the opportunity to show that it was a one off.

“We did bounce back in terms of the result, maybe not in terms of the performance.”

Underwood added: “Though we were not at our best in the first 20 minutes we looked quite threatening and it was a superb save from Manny Williams’ header.

“As the half went on we lost our way a little bit. I didn’t think we were passing the ball sharp enough and there were a few too many un-forced errors. There was just a bit of frustration creeping in and we were frustrated as managers at half-time.

“We asked them to be a little bit braver on the ball, move it a bit quicker and try to make things happen, try and put a bit more pace in the game.

“To their credit, we did that at the start of the second half. We didn’t create lots of chances, that disappointed us a little, but I don’t want to be over-critical. We've come off the back of a terrible night on Tuesday and bounced back with a win and a clean sheet."

Commenting on the clash that saw Oyinsan and Smith sent off, Underwood said: "I'm baffled by the caution for Nathan.

"Their lad struck him in the face, for me it was not a full on punch, but he certainly caught him in the face with his hands.

"Nathan just turned and didn't do anything aggressive. He said something to him, as you do when someone hits you in the face.

"He didn't square up to him or push him. I don't know what else you can do when you get punched in the face other than what he did.

"We weren't even thinking that there was a danger of him being in trouble if I'm honest.

"Their lad has got to go because he has raised his hands but I just think they got it massively wrong. They spent three of four minutes talking about it and still got it wrong.

"I'm just baffled to be honest and have still not got an explanation as to why Nathan was sent off."

Underwood added: "The frustrating thing was if they didn't sent Nathan off, at 11-v-10 we could have kept the ball and had a more comfortable last 20 minutes.

"As it happened, the game got a bit more open and stretched at 10-v-10. They didn't really have a clear chance, a few balls into the box and a few scary moments but we saw the game out relatively well."

The win keeps Slough in fifth place in the league table ahead of a visit to Arbour Park from Weymouth on Tuesday (7.45pm).
