CHAIRMAN Scott Young has admitted that Chalvey Sports will be kicking themselves if they fail to win the Hellenic Division Two East title this season.

Chalvey won 3-2 at Chalfont Wasps Reserves on Saturday to remain unbeaten at the top of the table, three points ahead of Flackwell Heath Reserves and with two games in hand.

The returning Daniel Sears, top scorer Ryan Hazell and sub Konnor Saunders got the goals at Chalfont and, though Young admits Sports are not playing at their best at present, he insists they have given themselves a great opportunity for a first league title in more than 20 years.

Young told the Observer: “We’re still looking over our shoulders because Flackwell are on a good run and only three points behind us. When we play them (Tuesday, April 4) it will be one of the defining games of the season most probably.

“We’re in the driving seat but everyone is queuing up behind us, waiting for us to make a mistake.

“The team has put us in the best position to win the championship and we will kick ourselves if we blow it, but we’re not playing at our best at the moment.

“I think if we can find our form again, and we will need to do so, then maybe we might be able to go on a run, win a few games and win the league.”

Commenting on the win on Saturday, Young said: “We went ahead on four minutes as Daniel got his first goal in his first game since re-signing. It was a good lob over the keeper and into the top corner.

“We were two goals ahead on 31 minutes when Ryan got his 30th of the season from close range – a tap-in as all good strikers do.

“We then won a penalty just before half-time but their keeper made a good save from a poorly struck effort, and what should have been 3-0 was 2-1 at half-time.

“Chalfont came out in the ascendency and played well in the second half though we defended and they were not able to score. We made changes and Konnor came on to score what turned out to be the wining goal with 20 minutes left.

“We conceded another sloppy goal and the last five minutes was backs-to-the-wall stuff as they threw everything at us. We had our hearts in our mouths for the final few moments, which was a bit scary.

“We were not at our best but we got the three points which was the most important thing.”

Chalvey Sports are at home to Division Two West leaders Kidlington Reserves in the Chairman’s Cup quarter-finals this Saturday (2.30pm).

“Our players go out to win every game and we would like to get to the final,” said Young.

"It's not going to be an easy ride. It's a clash of the divisional leaders in the chairman’s cup.

"We played them earlier on in the season and won 4-1 after extra time. It was relatively comfortable but we were tightly matched and they will be looking for revenge.

"It's going to be a tough game but we've got to be a challenger.
