LANGLEY kept alive the dream of an historic quadruple of trophies after defeating Chalvey Sports Reserves 4-3 in the third round of the League Cup on Saturday, writes Ryan Gibbs.

Langley had a hill to climb from the start after conceding a sloppy goal within 30 seconds of kick-off through two individual mistakes.

The work rate of both teams was very intense and it was clear neither side was going to roll over.

After a build up of pressure and a few words at half-time, Langley pulled a goal back just after the break when Shermron Carty finished a well-worked team move.

However, Langley fell behind again through a defensive mix up, allowing a Chalvey free-kick to nestle in the net from distance.

Added pressure resulted in Chalvey scoring an own goal which took the game to extra time.

Langley’s fitness began to pay off and numerous chances were created, which led to Callum Hughes finishing very well.

This was short lived though as Chalvey replied immediately with a well taken goal.

The final two minutes of extra time were on a knife-edge. However, a well worked move allowed Ben White to finish the tie with an excellently taken goal.

Langley coach Peter Phillips was full of praise for both sides.

He said: “On a different day we make no mistakes and take our chances to make life easier, but that wasn’t the case.

“Mistakes happen and it’s how we respond that matters.

“We continued to work hard and got the job done, but credit to Chalvey who just wouldn’t give up. They’re an honest, hard-working side.”

Phillips added: “We’re just taking it one game at a time.

“We know the run-in is going to be tough but it’s all in our own hands.

“We’ve got an excellent squad and the aim is to keep them focused.

“This is where the experience of first team manager John Thirkell really helps as his calmness is reassuring and it settles the lads.”

Langley take on Robertswood this Saturday in the quarter final of the League Cup, and will face Chalvey Sports Reserves again in the Ascot & Fielding cup on May 3.
