MORE than 100 young goalkeepers attended the GK Icon free open evening at Stag Meadow last Wednesday.

Richard Lee was personally on hand to take the training along with former Coventry City keeper Scott Shearer and Dean Thornton, the current goalkeeping coach at Swindon Town.

Current Fulham keeper Dave Button also attended the event for a Q&A session with the older age groups and parents.

Lee said: “We had set ourselves a target of 50 keepers to attend. This was a big target but I wanted to set a challenge for the team (coaching colleagues and administrators).

"I knew there was serious talent in the vicinity and I wanted to ensure we attracted that talent, and had the opportunity to introduce some newbies too.

“When over 100 turned up, I was pleasantly surprised and slightly nervous at the same time. However, I need not have been concerned. The talent on show was really impressive and the attitude was impeccable from all those who took part.

“The launch was a reasonably general session that focused on plenty of handling, shot-stopping and distribution drills.

“The week-to-week sessions go much deeper, focusing on other topics to, such as cross taking, positioning, communication, decision making plus improving physically, tactically and mentally.

“Every single young keeper took it so seriously and despite the large number of participants everyone can agree it was an excellent session. That is a testament to the quality and attitude of those who took park.

“They were a pleasure to coach and seemed thrilled by the appearance of David which, for me, was the icing on the cake.”
