DANIEL Gaut has become the PowerBox Promotions Class B heavyweight champion after a win against David Merton on Sunday.

The Slough boxing sensation, who first got into the sport to raise money for charity, took the next step up the ladder thanks to a referee’s decision over Merton at the Atik in Windsor.

Gaut feels he is improving as a boxer but, despite winning a first title, admits he still has a lot to learn.

He told the Observer: “I’m quite happy with the performance myself, some people might now be, but I got the win, that’s the important thing and it was a good learning curve.

“I’ve got stuff that I can improve on now and we’ve got a long time to work until I’m back out in December, so in the next fight you will see the best of me.

“On Sunday, you could definitely see that my boxing has improved. I felt a lot more confident in the ring, more comfortable and I wasn’t really fazed by the atmosphere.

“I boxed well but I’ve got a lot to learn, to listen to my corner more and do what they tell me to do.

“There were no nerves, I was excited. It was weird, I was looking forward to it. Sometimes you go through that dread faze but I was actually looking forward to it. It was an enjoyable experience for a change.

“I’m nowhere near the finished article. I’ve got so much more I can improve on and with time, and working more with Stanlee Wilson (coach), there’s a lot a can learn.”

Denny Bulman became the first boxer to hold two PowerBox titles after he beat Luke Corriette on a referee’s decision for the vacant super middleweight crown.

Bulman, already the light heavyweight champion, said: “I’m over the moon. I didn’t expect to win two belts. There has been a lot of hard training but it’s all been worth it in the end.

“It was a great fight. The hardest fight I’ve ever had. Luke came out well and we both stole the show.

“I felt a bit tired to be honest after training and fighting on back-to-back shows. I still had a lot of aches and pains from the last one but luckily my adrenaline came through in the end, and I won became I was a bit fitter than Luke.

“It was a lot tougher but winning meant a lot more this time because it was a harder fight and I had to work harder for it, so it was a very enjoyable fight.

“Winning one title is never good enough. I was really nervous before the fight, I get nervous before every one, but I knew he was a good fighter and what to expect.”

Elsewhere on the nine-fight card on Sunday, debutante Sid Ridgwell lost in a referee’s decision against Joe Habgood of Windsor.

Ridgwell, of Slough, said: “I enjoyed it. It was a hard fight to be fair and my nerves got the better of me. I went in there and got tired quickly.

“Joe is a strong and quick fighter and he threw a lot more shots. He deserved to win the fight and fair play to him, but I have it all I got. I got tired and the best man won.”
