MARK BETTS believes that a first win for Burnham this season is right around the corner after two near misses this week.

Burnham put a heavy defeat behind them to draw 2-2 at home with Abingdon United on Saturday before a narrow 2-1 loss at Flackwell Heath on Bank Holiday Monday.

Betts has been encouraged by the two performances and has backed his local stars to turn their fortunes around, with Woodley United set to visit The Gore next Tuesday (7.45pm).

The Blues boss told the Observer: “We probably should have won on Monday. I spoke with their manager after the game and he said we were well worth a draw.

“It was a game of two halves and that’s a funny expression in football. We came out and battered them in the second half but we could not put our chances away.

“We gave a good account of ourselves but the result was just not a reflection of how the game went -we should have won.

“The strong feeling in the changing room was good on Saturday and we took that into Monday.”

Looking back on the draw with Abingdon, Betts said: “It was a much better performance as well.

“I was horrified when I found out what the score was the week before, when I was away on holiday and when we were really struggling at centre back.

“It is great to get going but when things like that happen it’s a massive kick in the teeth.

“Abingdon are sitting fifth in the league and are well-drilled and well-organised.

“We thought we could have nicked it but their keeper pulled off a great save at the end. We will settle for a point but it felt like a victory to be honest.”

On the visit of Woodley next week, he added “We will go again and, based on the last two performances, things are getting better.

“We’re looking to get a result at home and if we can it will help our confidence a lot. Starting with a home win would be key to confidence because we’ve not yet got an established set up.

“We are giving local lads the chance and working with them because we’ve not got a big budget. We probably need two more players and if we can get them then we will be okay.

“Our aim is to finish higher than last season and not be in the position we where in last year. It’s still very early days but things are definitely on the up and getting better.”
