CHALVEY Sports have made progress in the Hellenic League Chairman’s Cup this season after a 4-3 win on penalties away at Brimscombe & Thrupp Reserves on Saturday.

Chalvey took the lead either side of half-time thanks to goals from Jason Marney but the tie ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and extra-time before the visitors held their nerve in the shoot-out at The Meadow.

Sports Chairman Scott Young was very satisfied with the win and told the Observer: “The pitch was a beautiful colour of green before we started but by the end of the second half it had turned into a bog.

“Give Brimscombe credit, it was a great game that went backward and forwards, and we didn’t take a couple of chances we created in normal time.

“Brimscombe took a chance to throw players forward, throwing caution to the wind, and got an equaliser. I was quite disappointed with that.

“But, we were much the better side in extra time and missed chances to finish it. We had a couple of shots cleared off the line where the ball held up in the boggy conditions.

“It was a long way to go for a game of football but we played well in testing conditions, especially in extra time. The players looked really up for it and they sprung into life with the majority of play and creating chances.

“We had to be mindful of Brimscombe on the counter-attack but we could have won it in extra time.”

Young added: “It was a great win on penalties. If you lose it is gut-wrenching but to win is a great feeling because it’s a bit of a lottery.

“Kieron Hudson was in great form and saw us through. Keepers have nothing to lose in that situation.”

Chalvey turn their attention to the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and a third round tie at home to Sandhurst Town this Saturday (3pm).

Young said: “We will only think about Sandhurst before the match and not who we will play in the fourth round.

"We always play with no fear. If you play with fear and worry about the opposition it always has a negative effect.

"We played Sandhurst in this round last year and won 3-1, and I thought we played really well in that match.

"It will be a really tough match because Sandhurst are a very good side that play good football and have made a decent start in Division One.

"We have nothing to lose being the underdogs and that comes with the chance to play with a bit of freedom You need to perform on the day and if you don't it's no good to us. We will put in a strong performance and see where it takes us.

"We're still unbeaten which is great. The lads are in good form but we need to keep going if they want to progress in the cups and defend the league title."
