Chalvey Sports have returned to winning form in Division Two East with a 3-1 victory away at Aston Clinton on Saturday.

Goals from Aydn Coomber and Ryan Hazell plus an own goal gave the Stabmonks a clear lead after 36 minutes at Aston Clinton Park.

The home side pulled one back before the break but Chalvey held on for the win to move up to second place in the league table.

Stabmonks manager Merv Lloyd told the Observer: “It was good and pleasing to get the win, to go there and get something.

“Give Aston Clinton some credit, there position in the league doesn’t flatter them because they’re a decent side.

“It was a terrible pitch and one of the worse I’ve ever played on. We realised and decided at half-time that there was probably no point in chasing the game. We were hoping to catch them on the counter-attack but we never done that.

“Players struggled with grip because the pitch was muddy and slippery and it didn’t suit the counter-attack. There was no traction at all when players wanted to run at pace.

“It was so wet that the kit bag was probably three times heavier when we brought it back.

“We’re good enough to hunt the game if we had to, and to get any points at all at Aston Clinton is a good thing I’m happy with the three points because it was a shocking pitch.

“I can see why Aston Clinton have not done so well on that pitch. You would have a better chance on an ice rink!

“I don’t want to go back there again for a long time and that’s why we want to get promoted this season.

"It was like coming from the freezer into the furnace. We have a lovely flat pitch and any decent player can read what the ball will do, but sometimes it's good to get back to basics."

The Stabmonks turn their attention to the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and a quarter-final tie at home to Newport Pagnell Town Reserves on February 3 (2pm).
