BURNHAM boss Alan Paris has explained that his side will take a more defensive approach when Wantage Town visit The Gore this Saturday (3pm).

Paris has so far failed to find a replacement for Kyle Bradley after the keeper suffered a broken jaw three weeks ago.

That showed in a 6-0 home defeat against Brimscombe & Thrupp on Saturday, leaving the Blues rooted to the bottom of the Hellenic Premier Division table.

Goals from John Evans, Sam Blackie and Ollie Pitts gave the Lillywhites a clear lead at the break before Jack Smith, Blackie and Jamie Vadasz struck in the second half.

Paris took a look at different keepers at training in midweek but hopes Burnham can keep things tight against third-placed Wantage.

He told the Observer: “The defeat on Saturday was basically down to individual mistakes really and only one goal was very good, from outside the box.

“We’ve got to think about shutting up shop on Saturday. We went 4-4-2 last weekend but maybe we should have been more defensive than attacking.

“The opposition are one of the best in the league so on paper they should beat us.

“We will not go hey ho in search of goals and will more try to keep things tight to start with and see how the games pan out. We will maybe got for it in the second half if we need to chase goals .

“If we could get points off the bigger, top teams then maybe the lower and mid-table sides will start to look over their shoulders.”

Commenting on the search for a new keeper, Paris said: “We had a couple at training on Wednesday and will see how they are, and we’re looking at one other.

“One of them plays in the league below but is in a representative side at level six and they’re in a cup quarter-final.

“He has been targeted as the best keeper in their league so it’s an ongoing situation and not easy. It’s frustrating for us because that team are doing really well and the player wants to stay to win cups.

“The other would come from a higher division to us. He plays in step four but is sat on the bench. He’s going to mull it over, sit on the bench and watch football or come and play for us.

“We’ve not had a steady keeper since Sam Bunting and conceding goals has often been down to the keeper rather than the defence.”

Burnham have nine league matches left to save their status in the Premier Division and, after the visit of Wantage, the Blues host Oxford City Nomads on February 10.

Burnham then go to Bracknell Town on February 17.
