SIGNCRAFT Chairman Bob Colwell insists that the race for the East Berkshire Division One title is far from over after a 3-2 defeat away at Slough Heating Laurencians Reserves on Saturday.

Signcraft remain top of the table despite their second league defeat of the season and five points above Richings Park Reserves in second, but the chasing pack all have at least two matches in hand.

Colwell told the Observer: “It’s definitely not ours to lose. We have some tough games coming up but that’s just the way the fixtures are.

“We have three or four tough teams coming up and the whole thing can change. We have a very tough game on Saturday so we’ve just got to get on with playing football.

“We’re in the mix and no doubt good enough to compete but we still have very good sides to play.

“To win Division One is quite a prize for any club because it’s not far off the standard of the Premier Division.

“It’s a big step us for us but it doesn’t matter whether we win or lose so long as everyone enjoys their football. It’s not so important to win every week.

“We could end up winning the league or finish third, but I can’t see us dropping away drastically.”

Signcraft welcome third in the table Britwell to Richings Park this Saturday (2pm).

Colwell said: “We’ve played Britwell this season and beat them but they were a strong challenge to us last year.

“We would never underestimate them because they’re a very good, tough side and different to a lot of other teams.”

Looking back on the defeat to Slough on Saturday, he added: “The conditions were not great for playing football for both sides. Mud is a great equaliser.

“I would give Slough credit for playing really well. They battled well against us. Slough won admirably and we left it too late.

“It took a lot for our players to get out of a certain mindset that no matter what we do we were not going to win and it would be one of those days.

“We had chances, slips in the box at crucial times, and refereeing decisions against us that could have gone either way.

“We were three goals behind with 15 minutes to go so really we left it too late to put it together. Slough were really on the back foot once we realised what we had to do.

“Slough were in complete control nearly all the way through and the day didn’t go well for us but I have no complaints.

"We've had a lot of good results this season so it's sobering that we didn't get what we hoped for. You can't win everything in sport.

"Slough scored three goals and we didn't. There's no reason why it was not a good result for Slough and a poor performance from us.

"We had two key players missing but that happens during the season."
