JACK Turner has opened his heart on winning promotion with Slough Town this season, hailing the success as the best feeling he has had in football.

Turner, 25, joined The Rebels from Staines Town in the summer and has been an integral part of the squad at Arbour Park.

The keeper started in all 63 matches this season, keeping 18 clean sheets, including against the likes of Gainsborough Trinity, Hereford, Kettering Town and Weymouth.

“I’m so delighted that it has not sunk in yet,” Turner told the Observer.

“It’s the best feeling I’ve had in football to date, especially with the group of lads we have got and what we’ve achieved with all those games in hand and away wins. It makes it all worth it.

“I left Staines to seek personal achievements and Neil Baker (joint-manager) told me he wanted promotion this season, so I’m delighted that we’ve stuck to our word.

“I came to Slough to help the club get promoted and I’m happy to have played a part in that.

“Personal achievements are good for me, I have a nice trophy with Warren Harris (joint Manager’s Player of the Year), but I’m more of a team player.

“It is a season that I don’t think I will ever forget and it’s mindblowing to get promoted, which is what we set out to do. As first seasons go, I will never top that with another club.

“To actually achieve promotion, which is what we set out to do, is a spine-tingling moment.”

Commenting on the promotion play-off final win, Turner said: “It was a really hard game and we knew it would not be easy because Kings Lynn have got a great record at home.

“We made it difficult for them to break us down early on, but for a period of 10-15 minutes they did get on top.

“We calmed down and looked better after their goal because the pressure was off us and on them to keep us at bay.

“We were confident we could score because of our character and recent form away from home. We know how to beat the best teams away from home and had confidence despite going a goal down.

“When we equalised it took the stuffing out of them a little bit, but we were on top so it was the perfect time to score.

“We came out fighting for the second-half and knew we could raise our game. We had not done ourselves justice in the first-half and knew we could raise our game further.

"There wasn't a lot of chances created by us but Kings Lynn never threatened. It was one of the easiest matches I've been involved in this season and I will take that with it being a play-off final.

"Credit to my defence, plus the front two and midfield worked hard to defend in front of us. We thoroughly deserved the win.

"We knew we could do more at half-time and raised our game a gear or two, plus we felt that was the best Kings Lynn could give us.

"We looked and felt comfortable in the second-half. Kings Lynn had a bit more possession but never troubled us."

Turner added: "I didn't celebrate the winning goal because, after the way we beat Merthyr, Karma could come back to bit us. I'm pretty superstitious so didn't want to jinx it.

"Kings Lynn supporters had their heads down but our fans were going mental at the other end and it gave me goosebumps watching it."

Looking ahead to the challenge of the National League, he added: "I'm excited. It will be a great challenge but one we will not shy away from.

"I hope that we will start fast and get some points on the board but, even with the boys we've got now, we can definitely hold our own in that league."
