LANGLEY Galaxy have won the East Berkshire Football League Trophy this season after a 5-1 win against Harefield St Mary’s.

A hat-trick from Simon Foster and two goals from Lewis Hewitt secured victory for Langley in the final at The Gore last Friday.

Club secretary Wendy Foster explained it was the result many people expected and believes it is just what Langley needed after a difficult season.

She told the Observer: “Harefield were the underdogs but we could take nothing for granted. It’s always difficult to play a team from a level below and more difficult when you’re expected to win.

“Harefield scored a goal because we switched off for a minute but it was a one-sided match really and quite a comfortable win.

“We were not at our very best in the first 10 minutes and needed to settle down.

“Harefield could have scored a goal in the first 10 minutes and the outcome could have been a lot different, but we settled down, did what we needed to and it all went our way.

“Harefield didn’t give up and there were some tough challenges. It was a meaty game but, luckily for us, we played the football we needed to and got the result.

“The scoreline reflected what people expected the match to be like and probably should have been a lot more.”

Langley are currently in fifth position in Division One of the East Berkshire Football League and Wendy admits they have struggled for consistency in the team.

She explained: “It was a great win for us and just what we needed because it has not been the best of seasons. It’s nice to go out on a high.

“It has been quite a difficult season and we were not at our best, but we will pick ourselves up and go again next year. It’s onward and upwards toward next season.

“We have quite a few players signed on but have struggled for consistency in the team.”
