DANIEL Gaut has regained the PowerBox Promotions heavyweight title after winning a Last Man Standing competition in Windsor on Saturday.

Gaut, 31, lost his crown to Fidel Asudi back in December but beat Billy Clifford on points in his semi-finals bout to set up a title decider against Danny Saunders.

However, the now two-time champion admits it was the toughest fight in his career emotionally after he and Saunders had agreed to donate the £1,000 prize money to Ashley Murray.

Murray lost his leg below the knee in a motorcycle accident and the two heavyweights wanted to help fund his medical needs.

Gaut told the Observer: “It was tough with two fights on one night but I’m really happy about it and to win the belt is the cherry on top.

“To be honest the most important thing was to win the prize money and donate it to Ashley, which we managed to do. He was extremely happy and very grateful.

“He has text me since to say thank you and it will make a big difference to him at some point.

“Billy is a tough man and I hit him with a big shout in the first round but he laughed and called me forward.

“I knew then it would be a long night but I just had to get the win. I just jabbed and moved, and used my brain and experience. It was a tough fight but I kept enough in the tank for the final.”

He continued: “It was all fine before the final until about 20 minutes before the fight when we realised because it was more about winning the money for Ashley.

“It was a really odd and not a nice experience. It was the worst feeling in my boxing career.

“It would have been different if we didn’t know each other, we would have knocked each others heads off.

“We didn’t know each other until the day but both wanted to win the money and donate it to Ashley, and it was more about that than winning.

“We had both done a good thing for Ashley so boxing one another was really tough. It was more of an exhibition than a fight.

“If we didn’t have that feeling it would have been totally different fight and we would have tried to knock each others heads off.

“It was a really good night of well-matched boxing, so thank you to PowerBox Promotions for providing us with that platform.”

Looking ahead to the future, Gaut explained: “I’m not looking to box again soon at the moment because I will help coach Mark Alexander for his upcoming fight with Stanlee Wilson.

“That will be a massive fight because it’s two popular local people clashing in the ring this October. Once that’s done I will decide what to do.

“I can defend the belt or their might be an eliminator competition, so there’s not too much pressure on me to fight if I don’t want to. I will look forward to the next show in the winter.”
