BURNHAM Tennis Club held its finals matches with some quality play in blistering heat.

There were all-play-all events with some close-fought matches in the juniors section on Saturday.

The eventual winner from the five mini red players was Amogh Amresh, with Jake Bailey the runner-up.

Gianluca Taborelli was the clear champion in the Under-12 (U12) section after winning all his matches.

Six boys contested the prestigious Guillebaud Trophy for U17s but only five lasted the course.

Matthew Would and Gabriel Kibble tied on wins so had to play a crucial championship tie break to decide the victor and it was Would who won by the small margin.

The 2017 winners all retained their crowns in the senior finals played in humid conditions on Sunday.

It was a case of experience winning out over the younger players in the singles.

First up was the ladies’ finial with Hazel Pickford beating Leah Cohen 6-2, 6-0 to win the title for a fifth time.

The match was much closer than the score suggests with many long deuce games, but Pickford always seemed to have the answers in the big points.

The experienced Noel Devereux won the men’s final for an amazing 11th time, but Dan Fulbrook pushed him to the absolute limit - 6-0, 4-6, (10-8).

Fulbrook made a nervous start which allowed Devereux to storm through the first set but, as the second wore on, Fulbrook cut down the unforced errors and it was the champion looking the more nervous.

Fulbrook built up an 8-6 lead in the deciding match tie break but Devereux won the last four points to deny the younger man.

The ladies doubles was won by Helen Trill and Sue Topchik for the fifth consecutive year after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sue Gray and Pickford.

Chris Beach and Fulbrook retained their men’s doubles title following a 6-3, 6-3 success against Neil Hodge and Nick Piercy.
