PAUL Shone is delighted that Burnham responded from a disappointing performance in the FA Vase to beat AFC Aldermaston 5-3 at The Gore on Tuesday.

Shone admits his side were below par in a 3-2 defeat at Wellingborough Town in the second qualifying round of the Vase on Saturday.

However, the Blues put that behind them to beat the Hellenic Division One East leaders thanks to a Lucas Sinclair hat-trick, plus goals from Aiden Higgs and George Weller.

Burnham boss Shone told the Observer: “We needed and response and the league is our bread and butter. We needed a reaction and a win, and we got all of that so I’m very pleased.

“We stuck to our task and I thought we were the better side. It was a bit of a contrast in performance from last weekend.

“Aldermaston are a very good side and will cause problems for a lot of teams in this league, but I was disappointed to concede three goals and in the manner that we did.

“It was a good performance overall from the players and we got the result we wanted.”

Wellingborough, from the United Counties Premier Division, won in the Vase at the Dog & Duck ground thanks to goals from Roy Johnson, Lloyd Buckbee and Adam Sleight.

Ashley James, who won the competition last season with Thatcham Town, and James Tripp were on target for The Blues.

Shone admitted: “We were under par in a very poor performance against a very average side. It was not acceptable all over the pitch and we deservedly got beat.

“Wellingborough tried a lot harder than we did although they had no real quality about them.

“We caused them problems in patches but weren’t consistent enough to force extra time or win the match in 90 minutes.

“It was a shadow of our performance the week before and that’s the most disappointing because it was a good opportunity to progress against an average side.”
